The Bold North Difference
Siding in Minnesota has one job above all others: keep water, ice, and cold out through decades of freeze-thaw cycling, hail seasons, and UV exposure. Most storm damage events that affect your roof also affect your siding — hail that dents or cracks shingles often cracks vinyl, dents aluminum, or compromises fiber cement siding on the same pass. Bold North Exteriors handles both sides of that damage under one roof — literally one contractor, one insurance claim, one install crew, and one cleanup.
LP SmartSide engineered wood siding is our primary recommendation for most Minnesota homeowners. It's built for our climate — engineered with a moisture-resistant core, SmartGuard treatment that resists fungal decay and termites, an impact resistance rating, and a texture and appearance that reads like real wood without the maintenance. It outperforms vinyl in cold temperatures where vinyl becomes brittle, handles hail better than standard fiber cement in most conditions, and comes with a 50-year limited warranty. We're LP-certified installers — which matters for warranty eligibility and installation quality.
Fiber cement siding — primarily James Hardie products — is our alternative recommendation for homeowners wanting the highest fire resistance rating or a specific look that LP doesn't offer. Both are excellent products in Minnesota's climate. We'll explain the genuine differences, including cost, maintenance requirements, and performance in our specific weather conditions, so you can make an informed decision rather than one based on what's most convenient for us to install.
Options we offer
Siding Products We Install
LP SmartSide Materials
Our primary recommendation. SmartGuard technology resists moisture and impact. 50-year limited warranty. Holds paint better than fiber cement, performs better than vinyl in cold temperatures. Available in lap, panel, trim, and soffit configurations.
James Hardie Fiber Cement
The leading fiber cement option. Non-combustible, excellent paint retention, 30-year limited warranty. Best for homeowners prioritizing fire resistance or specific regional aesthetics. Heavier than LP, requires additional installation attention in Minnesota's wind environment.
Steel & Aluminum Metal Siding
Steel and aluminum siding panels are built for homeowners who want a low-maintenance exterior with a long service life. Steel is the more impact-resistant of the two and handles Minnesota hail better, a real consideration in the south metro. Aluminum is lighter, rust-resistant, and a practical option for replacing existing aluminum cladding on older homes or for homeowners wanting a metal exterior at a lower price point. Both hold up through freeze-thaw cycling without cracking or warping the way vinyl can in extreme cold, and neither requires the repainting schedule of wood-based products.
Vinyl Siding
Cost-effective option for budget-focused projects. Adequate performance in moderate conditions, but becomes brittle in extreme cold and is more susceptible to hail impact than engineered wood. We install vinyl but recommend LP SmartSide for most Minnesota homes.
How It Works
Our Siding Process
01
Inspection & Assessment
We assess existing siding condition, identify storm damage, moisture infiltration, and any underlying sheathing issues that need addressing before new siding goes over them.
02
Material Selection
We walk through LP SmartSide versus fiber cement versus vinyl honestly — based on your home, your budget, and your priorities — and give you our recommendation.

Why Bold North
The Right Team For the Job
LP Certified Installer
Certification ensures our LP SmartSide installations meet LP's specifications — which is required for the 50-year warranty to apply. Most installers aren't certified.
Honest Material Comparison
We tell you what LP, fiber cement, and vinyl each actually does in Minnesota conditions — not what generates the highest margin for us.
One Crew for Roof and Siding
If storm damage affected both your roof and siding, we handle both — one insurance claim, one crew, one project.
What Homeowners Say
Don't just take our word for it - hear from real Minnesota homeowners who've experienced our no- pressure, transparent estimate process.
It was fantastic working with Jon and Bold North Exteriors. We had just a small job for him to do and he took the time to find the exact color match and made sure it was perfect. Communication was great and would highly recommend him anytime. Whenever we need roofing done in the future, Jon is the guy we will call.
Jen Wood
They did a good job with installing two new exterior doors. Good communication, on schedule, cleaned up properly afterward.
Dawn Packard
Jon from Bold North Exteriors delivered on a tricky project for us and was top notch! I would not hesitate to use him for future needs or to recommend him to anyone.

Common Questions
Siding FAQ
How much does siding replacement cost in Minnesota?
LP SmartSide installation typically runs $8–$14 per square foot installed depending on home size, profile, and any trim work included. James Hardie fiber cement is generally comparable. Vinyl is 20–30% less expensive upfront. If your siding sustained storm damage, your homeowner's insurance often covers a significant portion of the replacement cost — we handle that documentation process.
What is the difference between LP SmartSide and James Hardie?
Both are excellent products for Minnesota. LP SmartSide is engineered wood with SmartGuard moisture and impact resistance treatment — lighter, easier to work with, and generally outperforms vinyl in cold temperatures. James Hardie is fiber cement — non-combustible, heavier, and excellent paint retention. The honest answer is that both perform well in our climate and the right choice depends on your specific priorities. We'll walk you through the real differences.
Will my insurance cover hail-damaged siding?
If your siding sustained hail damage in a covered storm event, yes — homeowner's insurance typically covers siding replacement. We document siding damage alongside roof damage and handle the insurance claim process the same way. One inspection, one adjuster appointment, one claim.
How long does siding installation take?
Most residential siding projects are completed in two to four days depending on home size and profile complexity. Combination roof and siding projects are typically coordinated to minimize disruption — materials delivered once, crew on site for a defined window, cleanup done before they leave.
