The Bold North Difference
There are two classes of asphalt shingles most Minnesota homeowners never hear about until they're getting a quote from a contractor who actually explains things. Standard architectural shingles — what most roofers install — carry no impact resistance rating. Class 3 shingles, tested under UL 2218 standards, are proven to withstand 1.75-inch diameter hailstones without cracking. Class 4 shingles withstand 2-inch hailstones. In a state where hail at 1.5 inches or larger hits somewhere in the metro almost every spring, that difference is significant — and it's why Bold North Exteriors made Class 3 the floor, not the ceiling.
IKO Dynasty is the specific Class 3 product we use on every residential installation. Dynasty features IKO's ArmourZone reinforced nailing surface — a 1.25-inch-wide tear-resistant band that dramatically reduces shingle blow-off in high winds. FastLock sealant provides aggressive adhesion that keeps shingles bonded through Minnesota's extreme temperature swings. Wind resistance is rated at 130 mph. The fiberglass mat is coated with algae-resistant granules that resist the black streaking common on roofs in our humid summers. And the Dynasty line comes in over 30 color blends — so you're not sacrificing curb appeal for performance.
The insurance angle is real and significant. Major carriers including State Farm and USAA offer premium discounts for homes with Class 3 or Class 4 impact-rated shingles. The discount varies by carrier and policy but can reach up to 20% on your homeowner's insurance premium. Over the lifespan of a roof, that adds up to thousands of dollars in savings — often enough to offset the modest cost difference between standard and Class 3 shingles entirely. We explain this to every homeowner we work with because most contractors never mention it.

It was fantastic working with Jon and Bold North Exteriors. We had just a small job for him to do and he took the time to find the exact color match and made sure it was perfect. Communication was great and would highly recommend him anytime. Whenever we need roofing done in the future, Jon is the guy we will call.

Common Questions
IKO Class 3 Shingles FAQ
What is a Class 3 impact resistance rating?
Class 3 is a shingle impact resistance designation established by Underwriters Laboratories standard UL 2218. To earn a Class 3 rating, shingles are tested by dropping 1.75-inch steel balls from specified heights without cracking. It is the second-highest rating available for asphalt shingles — Class 4, which withstands 2-inch impacts, is the highest. In Minnesota's hail environment, Class 3 is the practical minimum for a roof that will perform well through multiple storm seasons.
How much can I save on my homeowner's insurance with Class 3 shingles?
The discount varies by carrier and policy, but major carriers including State Farm and USAA offer premium reductions for homes with Class 3 or Class 4 rated shingles. The discount can reach up to 20% on your annual premium. We provide the certification documentation your carrier needs to apply the discount after installation — this is something many contractors skip entirely.
Why don't most roofing contractors use Class 3 shingles as their standard?
Margin. Standard architectural shingles are cheaper, and most contractors pass that savings to themselves rather than to the homeowner. The cost difference between standard and Class 3 shingles is modest — often a few hundred dollars on a full replacement — but many contractors position Class 3 as a significant upgrade to charge more for it. We made Class 3 our floor because it is the right product for Minnesota.
Does the Dynasty shingle carry a manufacturer's warranty?
Yes. IKO Dynasty carries a lifetime limited warranty when installed by an IKO ROOFPRO certified contractor following IKO's installation specifications. As an IKO-certified installer, Bold North's Dynasty installations qualify for full warranty coverage. We provide warranty documentation after every installation.
